New York Red Bulls midfielder Emil Forsberg was named MLS Player of Matchday 12 for his two-goal and two-assist night during Saturday’s 7-0 thrashing of the Los Angeles Galaxy in what was a 2024 MLS Cup Final rematch.
He is the first Red Bulls player to earn the award since Lewis Morgan for Matchday 6 during the 2024 campaign, when he scored a hat trick against Inter Miami.
Forsberg assisted on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s opening goal in the seventh minute, then nabbed his first tally of the night in the 16th minute to double New York’s advantage.
The veteran Swede repeated the pattern, providing the helper for Choupo-Moting’s second in the 32nd minute before he gave the Red Bulls a 4-0 lead in the 50th with a brilliant free kick.
With his performance, he joined Antony de Avila in July of 1997 as the only players in franchise history to record multiple goals and multiple assists in a single MLS match.
Forsberg now has 14 MLS goals and nine assists since joining New York in December of 2023 in a high-profile move from Red Bull Leipzig of the German Bundesliga.
“It’s a hard thing to explain, you just have fun out there,” Forsberg said of his dominant performance. “You help each other, you have fun, you play one-two, you play forward, you score goals together. With our fans in the back, it’s the best feeling. I think everybody is going home happy.”
